Jinan Bocuiming Lake:Retracing Time, Relaunching the Textile Era 2.0
Jinan, Shandong Province

Located in the Tianqiao District of Jinan’s old city area, the site was the home to the now defunct National Cotton Factory. With its flat terrain, well-preserved buildings, and historic sycamore trees the site offered many attributes to complement its transformation into a valuable public space.  The newly constructed subway and convenient transportation in the surrounding area this site became an advantageous location for urban revitalization and new development.

The revitalization effort involved the transformation of historical buildings, adding lifestyle possibilities while preserving the site’s industrial heritage.  The design concept combined modern elements, art, and preservation with new functions that showcase the history of the textile factory.  The architectural design draws inspiration from the original factory building's features, such as gable arches and sawtooth skylit roofs combining  a modern minimalist style with nostalgic gray brushed stone to achieve a harmonious unity of old and new elements.

The landscape design continues the integration of new and old elements, sloping roofs, and other features. The landscape recreates the historical textile culture with modern elements, integrating vertical greening and interactive water features.  The alternation of day and night showcases the dynamic intertwining of the old and new deepening the integration of industrial heritage and urban culture to offer residents a new spiritual public social space.

The street interface and entrance walls adopt modern artistic elements that blend with the style of the old factory buildings, connecting memories of the National Cotton Factory to the present day.  The iconic structure, inspired by textile shuttles and spindles, harmoniously combine plantings and water features, becoming the visual center of the space.

The Octave of Ages integrates modern creativity into the form of old buildings, providing a private space for communication and enriching visitors' cultural exploration.  The sculpture Dancing Life in the center symbolizes the progress and innovation of the times. This public space is the home of memories, connecting the past, present, and future.

The creative inspiration for one of the feature walls comes from the vibrant production line scenes in the textile workshop.  The arrangement of yarn spindles in the style of the original textile machines forms a spatial matrix with a strong sequence.
